Turning Fishermen Into Garbagemen

When the fish are all gone...

WITH FLOATING HEAPS OF PLASTIC CHOKING the world's oceans and fishermen chaffing at new regulations meant to protect dwindling European fish stocks, a top EU official has proposed a clever idea that may help address both problems: Pay fishermen to catch plastic trash, rather than fish. EU fisheries chief Maria Damanaki has been under fire for the European Commission's plan to ban discards of edible fish. The practice is no small problem, The Guardian wrote this week:

Two-thirds of the fish caught in some areas is thrown back, usually dead, because fleets exceed their quota, unintentionally catch juveniles or species for which they lack a quota, or because they prioritize higher-value fish and throw away lesser species. About 1 million tons are thrown back each year in the North Sea alone.

Instead of caving in to the fishing-industry pressure on the issue, Damanaki has vowed to move forward with the discards ban—saying "time is running out" to make "radical reform"—while offering fishermen an alternative source of income. Under a trial project to start in the Mediterranean this month, fishermen will be equipped with special "nets to round up the plastic detritus that is threatening marine life, and send it for recycling," The Guardian wrote. The EU will initially subsidize the initiative, but the hope is that it could eventually become self-sustaining as fishermen make more money from the recycling itself.

Read it all.

It may be a step down in one's own personal psyche, to go from food supplier to garbage collector, but if it needs to be done, somebody's got to do it, and impoverished fisherman should step to the task, and get 'er done for decent wages, of course. Oops, that's government nee the people's money, but I've always said littering is one of the first signs of a dangerous personality though probably the most preventable of sins an individual can make.

The Obama War On the Middle Class

middle class war
Middle Class Warriors
Ripped from the headlines at MSNBC:

The GOP has their whole economic theory UPSIDE DOWN and DEAD WRONG. The reason tax revenues have plummeted is NOT because America is broke. Both corporate profits and GDP are ABOVE where they were in 2007.

So why is there no tax revenue coming in? Because the money isn't going to WAGES, it's being siphoned off by the investor class.(See the chart)

When workers are paid wages, 100% of that money goes back into the economy. They pay both income taxes and payroll taxes (which account for 36% of U.S. tax revenue), and they spend the rest on goods and services right here in America.

But when the money earned for corporations by their workers is instead diverted to corporate profits and the investor class, tax revenues plummet (NOT grow, as Paul Ryan so history-blindedly predicts). Despite their vastly higher income levels, corporations' share of the tax burden is only 12% due to their vast amounts of tax writeoffs, credits and creative accounting. Both investors and corporations are more likely to move their earnings overseas (into either tax shelters or foreign investments). And foreign entities also hold a big share of the stock market, diverting corporate profits abroad before the American tax system gets a penny.

The investor class also pays an historically low tax rate of 15% on their earnings, as most are capital gains. And neither corporations nor investors pay payroll taxes, a factor which alone knocks a huge hole in the tax rolls. Even when investors do pay earned income tax rates on a portion of their income, those top tax rates are at their lowest since the 1930's. U.S. tax revenues as a percentage of GDP are far lower than many countries whose economies are recovering faster than ours.

The GOP solution? Cut off all the remaining government services that benefit the working class. Cut the top tax rate even lower. Drive wages down even further.

$4 trillion in cuts? This is the same guy that wouldn't agree to cut $60 billion for 2011 and I'm to believe he's serious about cutting anything?

Protect the middle class? I'm sorry Mr. President....the middle class gets almost no benefit from all the social programs you advocate. The middle class gets no benefit from your foreign aid. The middle class gets no benefit from excessive government pensions, your subsidies to the energy companies, your healthcare reform act, etc, etc.

This speech was just another useless campaign speech talking about all he's going to do with no direction and no formulated plan or specifics.

P.S. Really MSNBC??? You're going to quote a spokesman from Harry Reid? You couldn't find anyone more out of touch with the American voter except maybe Pelosi or Palin.

Nicking The "Late Feudalism" Attack Machine With The Vote

Where Is My Vote?
IT TOOK ME A LONG TIME to realize that communism and socialism are just the rebirth of economic late feudalism. I kind of got it well enough before this one conversation, but it was something the son of a Cuban immigrant, whose father started his own small restaurant, that clarified it for me. It was simple: He said of the Europeans and their socialism, "Yeah. They want to have the money and not let anyone else get it." Doesn't sound profound, but it hit the nail on the head for me:

These rich advocates of socialism and communism, like a Bill Ayers, know they will always be part of a privileged class. They are not going to give away all their money. And they will not allow the government to take all their money. They will make sure their offspring are "cared for"—and not cared for by the state...

So, instead of selling off all their assets, donating almost all of it to the poor, and living off, say, $50,000 a year—they are willing to give up an ultimately inconsequential amount of their wealth in the form of taxes if the government will do the same to everyone in a draconian tax system that funds a government "wealth redistribution" system. That will make them feel better about being elite. The problem is—the draconian tax system ends up dramatically freezing social mobility. There has never been a system with as much social mobility as capitalism. Communism produced only revolutions in which old aristocrats were slaughtered by those who became the new ones.

Socialism is less bloody. It just freezes things as they are. Which is a pretty good deal for the rich. Competition is stifled and upstarts don't crash their dinner parties...

B-I-N-G-O! Been telling my wife that for years. Obama did it for me. His disgruntled women Hillarycrats continue to be in denial about how false communism really works. Grab all the money, then...well, one can suggest that socialism is less bloody unless one actually counts the corpses of the state's enemies in the case of rigid communism, or a considerable slide in the quality of life for those trapped in the cage of confused and confusing socialism. While each of those centralized governing systems believes that practice makes perfect, we here at the Project still maintain that capitalism, and capitalism governed by a moral and just democratic infrastructure remains the purest form of communism every practiced.

But we do appreciate your insights. Oh yeah, the Hillarycrat women still think Obama is Bush III, as they did even before the election of 2008 in which they had their Hillary votes stolen at every turn right up to the Democratic Convention. So we learned a thing or two from these women, these lifelong Dems. But we immediately saw his special deep pockets connection to Wall Street a natural place for a pseudo-Marxist (the only kind the world has ever seen) in motion, to suck all the money upward, and truly cripple the economy. Part Two is far worse should he get re-elected. God forbid.

The American Sisyphus

It's uncanny that both US political parties use the very same descriptions (right up to the same exact words) to incite fear among their own constituents in an attempt to soil their political opposition. Both fear the same outcomes, and accuse the other of being fearmongers. Both claim the same desires, and accuse the other of systematically thwarting the honest fulfillment and judicious harvest of their own spirit-filled policies. This money-charged he said, she said plants "hope in change" among the hapless voter classes every year or two, but the Sisyphian task of governing a critical mass remains critical as long as there are people who refuse to govern themselves at least as critically as they govern others.

Here is one liberal feminist's rather opaque outlook:

sisyphus

SUSIE GAVE THE STANDARD ANSWERS about what can be done. Show up at a congressman’s office en masse, hang out in front of the restaurant where he/she and friends have lunch, throw a tent city or two and call the local paper or TV station about it. Butcha know, I don’t think that’s going to work anymore and as one of them said: the right has the biggest megaphones and they simply won’t report it.

The right knows their voters. They motivate their voters to vote by romanticizing the fetus, by appealing to their religiosity. If bad things happen to other people, it’s because they weren’t as pious and good as the typical Fox News viewer. That same religiosity prevents the religious conservative from doing too much to help the poor by contacting their representatives and demanding action. It’s because there is so much evil and bad and pain in the world that mankind does not have the capacity to clean it up. Only God does. So, we need to just wait for Jesus to come back, which should be any day now. If you’ve ever wondered what the apocalyptic messaging in right wing propaganda has to do with anything, there’s the reason. It’s to keep the older conservative voter who sees disturbing things from taking any action.

If Susie wants to know what to do, she is going to have to target these viewers to get involved. One thing that temporarily woke people up was the sight of so many people suffering in the wake of Katrina in New Orleans. Which means that the news machine will be very careful to never do that again. So, if you can’t bring the news to the people, maybe you have to bring the people to the news.

Don’t isolate your older, more conservative relatives. Tell them what’s going on because you’ve seen it personally. Tell them what is happening to your unemployed friends. If they ask why they’re not willing to relocate, tell them the truth. There are no jobs. Anywhere. Be harsh with them. They won’t want to see you. But they’ll call and ask why you haven’t come to visit. Tell them you’re trying to help your friends—who are unemployed and that they just don’t get it. They’ll go on about how God is the only one who can clean this mess up. Tell them that’s bullshit and Jesus wouldn’t want them to ignore the poor. If they tell you that you’re friends did something wrong, tell them the only thing they did wrong was being born in the wrong part of the 20th century. If they say, yes, it’s true, the older generation has it good in comparison, tell them, great! We’re moving in with you. With the bird. And the kid who likes to play Edith Piaf songs all. the. time. and refuses to speak to you in anything but French and eats like there’s no tomorrow. When they express some hesitation about that, tell them to turn off the fricking TV news.

As for Susie, I think she has a future in broadcasting but she really has to ditch her propensity to glom onto left wing memes. I’m not saying stop being liberal. I’m saying stop letting the left do your thinking. On one broadcast a couple of months ago, I think Athenae was on, they got so frustrated with it all that they want to just ditch everything and go rustic, which is great if you have no dependents. But in some respects, it reminds me of the older religious person’s decision to just stay in the house away from the evil men and sexual predators until Jesus comes back. You can’t run away from the world’s problems when they seem insurmountable. If you do that, the bad guys win. They want people to feel helpless. Learned helplessness is their goal.

The only way to win is to get together and fight back. And if Susie hasn’t figured this out yet, the left’s support of Obama in 2008 has resulted in thousands of sparkling shards of leftiness with the incapacity to reform itself. I keep appealing to people like Susie to stop blowing us off and join with us and let’s do something together. But the left hasn’t given up on the stuff that doesn’t resonate with their potential allies who work for the big corporations the left condemns. It’s incomprehensible to me that for all the intelligence the left claims it has that it hasn’t figured out yet that the corporations are not the ogres here. It’s the rulemakers they help elect. If the rules weren’t bent or destroyed, the corporations would go back to playing by the rules and merely scheming like grinches instead of running around causing havoc like Thing 1 and Thing 2. Then there are people like us who voted for Hillary and are still personas non grata.

We’re always going to think Obama was the wrong guy for the moment. But why would the left cut off half of its strength if it really want to make a change? Let me ask you this, Susie, why haven’t you asked any of US on your show yet? Not that we can’t host our own shows but that’s hardly togetherness, is it?

Now here we get to the real concession in drawing the line where right greets left, they shake hands, fold their cards, then settle back into their routines for another round of the Sisyphus game from which we are never expected to resist:

The left’s obsession with perfection mirrors the right’s eschatological fervor. Neither one addresses the causes and concerns of people in the middle who still bitterly cling to their FDR era programs with track records of success for those who participate. Both sides insist that if they can’t have everything their way, no one will get anything at all.  In this respect, the left does as much damage to its cause as the right does with its huge megaphones.

If you want to know why no one hears your cries, it’s because you haven’t joined with other voices. And the men in charge, and it’s ALWAYS men, like it that way. Power is the ultimate drug and no one is going to wrest it from them without a fight. As long as the left remains broken, Susie and her tent cities are no threat to the power brokers.

Property
Ownership of Private Property
FOR A WELL-REASONED and well-written treatise on the virtues of property ownership as the salve for what curses us as a people in constitutional crises, check out this essay by Ludwig von Mises of which the following excerpt is provided...

Most social problems which perplex national leaders could be solved fairly simply by an increase in the amount and type of property owned. This would entail the equally important, general recognition that ownership is and must be total, rather than merely a governmental permission to possess and/or manage property so long as certain legal rules are complied with and "rent" in the form of property taxes is paid. When a man is required to "rent" his own property from the government by paying property taxes on it, he is being forbidden to fully exercise his right of ownership. Although he owns the property, he is forced into the position of a lessee, with the government the landlord.

The proof of this is that if he fails to pay the taxes the government will take his property away from him (even though it is his property and not the government's), just as a landlord would kick out a tenant who failed to pay the rent. Similarly, if a man must comply with laws dictating the use or upkeep of his property (or any other rule except that of not using the property to initiate force or fraud against others), he is being forbidden to fully exercise his right of ownership.

Ludwig von Mises
Ludwig von Mises
Because a man must use his time—which is part of his life—to acquire, utilize, and care for property, he has a right to own and control that property fully, just as he has a right to fully own and control his life (so long as he doesn't use it to coerce any other man). Any form of property tax or regulation denies the individual's right to fully control his own property and, therefore, his own life. For this reason, taxation and regulation of property is always wrong — taxation is theft and regulation by initiated force is slavery.

In a governmentally controlled society, the unrestricted enjoyment of property ownership is not permitted, since government has the power to tax, regulate, and sometimes even confiscate (as in eminent domain) just about anything it pleases. In addition, much potential property is not permitted to be owned. In a laissez-faire society, everything which was valued and rationally claimed would be owned, and this ownership would be total.

Property is anything which is owned. Ownership is the right to possess, use, and/or dispose of anything to which one has a moral claim. Property may be acquired by producing it, by exchange with others, as a gift, or by claiming an unowned value. The claiming of unowned values is the way in which all property originally came to be owned.

Mohammed Says War Is Deceit

More and more ordinary people in America are awakening to the snicker of the jackals and the impassioned roar of the lions set in claw upon these shores. Here is Frosty Wooldridge in his essay—Muslims In 21st Century America: Arrogant, Righteous And Determined—pointing out what many in the citizenry have already discerned. Unfortunately, our bankrupt nation is being sold out by our cowardly leadership. What will it take for the West to finally grow a pair, and stand up for our own civilization instead of importing its own destruction?

women-jihadists
War Is Deceit

AS POLITICAL CORRECTNESS allows and emboldens Muslims to continue their invasion of the United States by any means necessary, few Americans understand our predicament with clear well-informed energies and fewer still speak up. While liberals and academics, living in gated communities and assorted ivory towers, shout to the rooftops the wonders of multiculturalism—a not-so-silent war machine moves into place barely scratching the surface of our seemingly peaceful society. Today, the U.S. Congress continues importing 100,000 legal immigrants every 30 days. That equals 1.2 million mostly poor, illiterate and unskilled people from third world countries that compete for limited welfare dollars and jobs. At the same time, 14 million U.S. citizens cannot obtain a job, 13.4 million American children live below the poverty line, and finally, 35 million American citizens subsist on food stamps.

Not once will you hear of any debate on the absurdity of adding 100,000 immigrants monthly to our already overwhelmed civilization. As reported in an earlier column, the U.S. suffers 40 million people that cannot read (“America filling up with dumb people” www.newswithviews.com) and 52 million Americans that cannot read past the 4th grade level. Results of poverty and illiteracy:

Unwed mothers birth tens of thousands of babies on public welfare. Black gangs attack white citizens in Denver, Colorado where I live. Hispanic gangs in Los Angeles rule the streets; so much so, police officers do not dare enter gang turf for fear of being executed. As their crimes accelerate, our national prison population, now at 2.3 million inmates, grows commensurately. While in prison, Islam appeals to and converts more and more minorities.

Read it all.

Branding Obamanomics 101

I snagged this little ditty from a FB acquaintance named Lyn Morales. It has the look and feel of a viral urban legend, but it is well worth a moment's ponder. Thanks Lyn...

Obama Equals Government
Obama Equals Government
AN ECONOMICS PROFESSOR at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had once failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan".

All grades would be averaged and everyone would receive the same grade so no one would fail and no one would receive an A. After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy.

As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little. The second test average was a D! No one was happy.

When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

The scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else. All failed, to their great surprise, and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.

Could not be any simpler than that. (Please pass this on.)

If somebody is unable to understand THIS explanation, I have serious doubts about their ability to even function in society, much less run our country!

As the late Adrian Rogers said, "you cannot multiply wealth by dividing it..."

We've since seen videos of this very same scenario. Students were none too happy to give up an iota of their hard-earned grades or natural skills for the sake of the class. Harrumph, tricks are for kids. Branding Obamanomics 101.
