What Makes a Good Shotgun?

OR RATHER, WE MIGHT PUT IT THIS WAY, what makes a shotgun good?

There's been a fair amount of debate here amounting to "My shotgun can whip your shotgun". Maybe some dialog on what we want and expect from our shotguns is in order. This can apply to both "Serious" and recreational shotguns. Here's my [set of] opinions, none graven on Tablets of Stone. A good shotgun should be....

Reliable. A failure rate of LESS than 1/200 rounds is minimal. Most modern US made repeaters qualify.

Durable. A use life of upwards of 35K rounds. Again, most modern US made repeaters can do this, some with a bit of small parts replacement.

Comfortable to use. This means fitting the shooter, of a weight consistent to the Rule of 96 with the load of choice, and capable of being shot many times in a short time period w/o pain. Ergonomics fit in here, and so does a clean, light but safe trigger.

Appropriate to the mission. 410s should not be used for pass shooting geese, nor 10 gauges weighing 12 lbs lugged through alder thickets for woodcock.

Appropriate to the shooter. That 10 gauge in pixie hands is punishing to use.

Affordable. Either on base price or per use. A $1K gun that lasts 50K rounds may be "Better" than a $500 gun that barely makes it through 25K.

Esthetically pleasing. This is completely subjective.

Capable of quick and effective deployment. Most shotgun usage, from crisis management to quail hunting, takes place in short time frames. The weapon, in the hands of THAT shooter, must be fast but sure.

Uses commonly available ammo. No 24 gauges. No 2" chambers.

That's about it. What do YOU think?

Thanks to Big Dave McCracken for the perfect shotgun theory detailed above, as he adds, "It's the pianist, not the piano." Works for me, as well.

On Watch for Serial Quitters

FORMER PRO WRESTLER and ex-governor of Minnesota Jesse Ventura made another one of his rather sniping comments of late: "Sarah Palin is a quitter. She quit as governor to go make money. I would have nothing to do with a party like that."

That logic would make Barack Obama a serial quitter then, and so many other politicians and coaches and uh, fill in the blank, as well. To quit one job to take another. Spin it anyway your experience takes ya, but everyone has his or her own motivating or extenuating circumstances, including athletes who jump college for the pros. Do we call these guys quitters. Some do, some don't. Jesse can say what he wants, but for those who thought he too had presidential or higher political ambitions than a one term governorship, it feels like he's a quitter too. Pretzel logic is all we have here folks, move along, nothing else to see here...

And while we are at it, ‎here's another quote worth posting.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling, which thinks that nothing is worth war, is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." —John Stuart Mill

The mysteries of the mind lead us nowhere, but it is they the pragmatic who lead by example those who would follow leaving those who would refuse another chance to go nowhere.

THE TITLE OF THIS POST means—I will NOT submit! This phrase should become part of every Westerner's walking around tongue.

And upon every Muslim mouth with an instinct for love and charity as well...

Tracking The Paradox Of Tolerance

Just in case some of my friends and foes alike can't figure this out for themselves, here's one of the 20th century's most persuasive philosophers writing against the tide of totalitarian ideologies. In support of capitalism and the freedom to fail or succeed while empowering the individual in life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, Karl Popper is plainly spoken in his rejection of Plato and his anti-individualist descendents:

all we are saying
Funniest and most insightful riff on this sad topic I've seen...

UNLIMITED TOLERANCE MUST LEAD to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. In this formulation, I do not imply, for instance, that we should always suppress the utterance of intolerant philosophies; as long as we counter them by rational argument and keep them in check by public opinion, suppression would certainly be most unwise. But we should claim the right to suppress them if necessary even by force; for it may easily turn out that they are not prepared to meet us on the level of rational argument, but begin by denouncing all argument; they may forbid their followers to listen to rational argument, because it is deceptive, and teach them to answer arguments by the use of their fists or pistols. We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant. We should claim that any movement preaching intolerance places itself outside the law, and we should consider incitement to intolerance and persecution as criminal, in the same way we should consider incitement to murder, or to kidnapping, or to the revival of the slave trade, as criminal.

It's The Immigration, Stupid!

As the United States announces that it will take in more than 5,000 Iraqi refugees now living in Syria, Brenda Walker of VDARE takes umbrage at the idea of persistent immigration of Muslims into our nations is in the best interests of the West. The article is rich in detail, and peppered with informative links. Here's a taste, sans its original links:

Richard Reid

IF THERE IS ANYTHING that should make Americans' blood run cold about immigration, it is the sight of Europe—and Britain, the home of Western civilization—being buried by millions of Muslim colonists. Europe is just hoping against hope that Islam isn't going to explode into massive rioting (or worse), or impose total cultural Islamification.

Major jihadist terror occurred in London (July 7, 2005, killing 52 and injuring 700) and in Madrid (March 11, 2004, killing 191 and injuring 1841). Yet cowardly politicians continue policies of appeasement, which hostile Muslims correctly apprise as the fatal weakness of a culture too pacified to defend itself.

Some Europeans already accept the coming Eurabia. One Dutchman, mourning the future loss of Europe was quoted by Paul Belien as saying, "I am not a warrior, but who is? I have never learned to fight for my freedom. I was only good at enjoying it."

Well, that's honest. But how about less self-pity and more directed anger? Many Americans I know in the patriotic immigration reform movement had a come-to-Jesus moment of awakening from passivity, turning to resolve to save the country.

Did America encourage Europe's socialist pacifism by protecting it too well, starting after the Second World War? Perhaps. Having your freedom handed to you on a plate is no way to appreciate its value.

Other causes of the continent's tragic downfall are rooted in recent history. They include business' desire for cheap labor (so familiar!), a trendy belief in secular multiculturalism as a replacement for Christianity and apparent ignorance of Islam's long-standing enmity toward Europe.

Now the triumphs of Tours and Vienna are being trampled by immigrants, entering mostly legally. It's a wonder the Muslims bother with terrorism at all when demography is working so well for them.

Read it all.

The Sounds Of Capitulation

In 1984, KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov explains how Marxist ideology is deconstructing America's values, destabilizing the economy, and provoking crises in order to sovietize the free world.

Yep, what a difference a few decades make. Nobody wants to be an American anymore. Instead, everybody that comes here wants to take a piece of America back to the Old Country, or ummah, as the case may be. The people who need to watch this video are those decent, hard-working and compassionate Obama voters, who voted for every plank of the Communist Agenda. Sweetie, that's the "change" you voted for.

Make no mistake about it. Leftists have taken over our schools, colleges, media, movies, music, pop culture, et cetera, and we have now elected a self-styled communist President. America needs to wake up. Western Marxism and Islam must be stopped. We must reject the sounds of capitulation.

Alan Keyes On Barack Obama

Alan Keyes

THREE-TIME PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE ALAN KEYES, a former Republican, has a few choice words for the current occupier of the Oval Office and the eligibility concerns surrounding him, the Obama policies in tending the current financial crisis, and the future of the United States as a nation. Keyes is very clear and forthright in this interview.
