In Amsterdam Koran Poster Draws No Outrage

HE NETHERLANDS is suffering from Koran fever, but Amsterdam seems not to be affected. The Tropenmuseum has put up some two hundred posters of an Iranian Koran throughout the city, as part of an image campaign. There has been hardly any response. The Netherlands is somewahat frazzled because of the plans of anti-Islam politician Geert Wilders to show a movie about the ‘Fascist’ Koran called Fitna. The Koran posters of the Tropenmuseum appearing during this Wilders controversy is a coincidence, for the posters were planned months ago. Still, previous attacks on the Koran did play a role in the decision...

Before It Is Too Late

HERE IS THE OLD STORY about a man whose family belonged to the German aristocracy prior to World War II, owning a number of large industries and estates. When asked how many German people were true Nazis, the answer he gave can guide our attitude toward fanaticism. “Very few people were true Nazis “he said,” but many enjoyed the return of German pride, and many more were too busy to care. I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools. So, the majority just sat back and let it all happen. Then, before we...

Global Iceman Cometh

OSCOW—Stock up on fur coats and felt boots! This is my paradoxical advice to the warm world. The Global Iceman Cometh! Earth is now at the peak of one of its passing warm spells. It started in the 17th century when there was no industrial influence on the climate to speak of and no such thing as the hothouse effect. The current warming is evidently a natural process and utterly independent of hothouse gases. The real reasons for climate changes are uneven solar radiation, terrestrial precession (that is, axis gyration), instability of oceanic currents, regular salinity fluctuations of the Arctic...

Mutually Assured Deception

heikyermami says, "When the Ayatollah Khomeini came to power in Iran he immediately set upon the useful idiots who were assisting him in what they believed would be some kind of socialist revolution. When the Russians pulled out of Afghanistan they left an operator named Najibullah behind. Google 'Najibullah' and check what happened to him, which is likely what would happen to Karzai, the darling of the West." Word to that. V S Naipaul—in Among the Believers—spent time with the earnest Persian socialists—the people who read the leftist and Soviet literature and truly believed in people's revolution and all that....

Truly Symbolic Of A Caliphate, Not Europe

ERHAPS IT SHOULD BE NOTED once again what a certain Muslim, a leader of present day Turkey, Recep Tayyip Edrogan has publicly proclaimed, "The mosques are our barracks, the domes our helmets, the minarets our bayonets, the believers our soldiers." To borrow a riff from Bob Dylan and merge it with the old Saturday Night Live tagline, surely it doesn't take a weatherman to know that Turkey's not quite ready for prime time, or to be a good neighbor to the European community. The prime minister has also been quoted as saying that the term "moderate Islam" is ugly and...
